The Top Tech Stories of the Decade

Techniques That Can Help You To Earn More Media Coverage

By Dorothy York, President and CEO of North American Precis Syndicate (NAPS)

To help our clients find formats that are getting the best results, North American Precis Syndicate ranks the top feature news stories of the year by the highest number of placements in media outlets nationwide. We have compiled the results to show the top feature news stories of the decade, those that have performed brilliantly, way above and beyond what is typically expected.

The most successful stories included attractive color photos or infographics, helpful advice from experts, celebrity spokespeople, the latest statistics, results from surveys, trends, time-saving tips, money saving ideas and other helpful information. The stories were targeting people across various demographic groups, relating to solving problems with technology, protecting the safety and assets, of the readers, their friends and family members.

We are passionate about working on the kinds of stories that help millions of people nationwide with the news that is potentially life saving or can improve the quality of their lives.

To name a few, here are examples by topic, of the work from the best and brightest Tech communications professionals for some of the most demanding management teams at leading organizations:

1- Software: Microsoft

2- Hardware, Devices, Related Products: HP

government agency.

possibly with an order form or a coupon, to help you to track where sales are coming from.

4. Phone: Include a phone number for more helpful information, which will help you to track where sales are coming from, and to help give readers a way to reach out to you if they are in one of the 30% of American households

that don’t yet have Internet access.

5. Education: Give tips on how to help children succeed in school with affordable Internet technology that provides valuable resources and include links to a few sites that can help, with a brief description of each opportunity.

6. Problem Solving: Give readers a list of possible errors they can avoid and include a mention of your product or service as a possible solution to help solve a problem.

7. Quality of Life: Offer tips to improve the quality of life of your readers in quick, easy, convenient and economical ways.

8. Small Business: Alert business owners and their staff about game-changing ways to succeed with updated technology that will help maximize their productivity.

9. Cloud-Based Technology: Inform readers of the opportunities to save time, trouble and money, including information about security, potential for real-time collaboration and reducing hardware, paperwork and management costs.

10. Jobs: Encourage readers, by alerting them of the career opportunities, to get the education, professional

development and training they need to help fill the many manufacturing, technician and other job openings.

11. Scholarships: Include information about online resources for simple and effective tools to help readers to

compare schools and qualify to win a scholarship for financial aid for an education.

12. Research: Indicate several ways that readers can find the information they are looking for, including your

site as a potential source of information.

13. Trends: Inform readers about technology trends to help them get peace of mind, such as streaming live

video to help care for a loved one at home.

and economically.

15. Myth Busting: Clear up any misconceptions that readers may have about advice they may have received

from a tech-savvy friend, relative or coworker, and give them the truth about your product or service.

16. Alternative Uses: Offer tips on how your technology can be used in a surprising variety of ways to help

readers at home, work or on the go.

17. Security: Inform readers about how they can protect their assets and health.

Here’s how one happy client used NAPS Featurettes to get electrifying results:

COMPANY OVERVIEW: ENERGY STAR® is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency, providing simple, credible and unbiased information that consumers and businesses rely on to make well-informed decisions. Thousands of industrial, commercial, utility, state, and local organizations—including more than 40 percent of the Fortune 500®—partner with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to deliver cost-saving energy

CHALLENGE: To encourage readers to look into smart thermostats in order to conserve energy.

APPROACH: ENERGY STAR and their Agency on Record, The Cadmus Group, commissioned NAPS to send out a feature with tips for homeowners. The article entitled “A Smart Thermostat Can Be A Smart Investment” accompanied with an infographic, detailed the smart ways to save energy, increase your comfort and decrease your costs.

RESULTS: This feature got well over 1,000 known placements, including 170 in print. This appeared in all 50 states, with a readership of 20 million and on sites with 72 million unique visitors cumulatively. About 53% of placements were in the top 50 markets, 64% were in the most populous third of the states and 47% were in the wealthiest 25% of states. The article was viewed 487 times on our site.

One way to amplify results even further would be to add on the multimedia Featurettes option, including more than 300 on-air radio placements and over 100 on-air TV placements. Here’s how one NAPS client described their experience:

"Having looked around for other providers, I am convinced that NAPS is the best way to go for broad dissemination of my releases, be they print, radio or TV."--John Goodwin, President, Galaxy Press.
