Read Across America Campaign (NAPS)—Forthe fourth year, the National Education Association (NEA)is inviting every child, every teenager, and every adult in every community to Read Across America (RAA) on March 2. This year that date celebrates what would have been Dr. Seuss’s 97th birthday. Last year more than 30 million celebrated NEA’s Read Across America on ships, in stadiums, city halls, schools, libraries, homes, and even in the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court. Kids of all ages read on March 2 with judges, police officers, firefighters, teachers, librarians, nurses, politicians, authors, actors, and others. Even more are expected to be engaged in Read Across America 2001. The theme for this year’s celebration—said to be the largest literacy event in the nation, if not the world—is Oh, The Places Youll Go, the beloved Dr. Seuss book that offers a wealth of wisdom on setting goals and meeting challenges.
