Environment Improving Air Quality (NAPSA)—Good newsfor those concerned about the environment. According to a new report by the US Environmental Protection Agency, the nation’s air quality has improved greatly since 1970. Emissions of the country’s six principle air pollutants have been cut by almost 50 percent. ES According to Edison Electric Institute, fewer emissions from the nation’s electric power plants have contributed to healthier air. During the past 30 years, the U.S. electric power industry has lowered its sulfur dioxide emissions by almost 40 percent. In 2004, nitrogen oxide emissionswill see a similar drop. Air quality has improved even though the demand for power has increased by about 75 percent in the last 20 years. To meet the growing demand and to protect air quality, power companies are using advanced pollution control technologies and cleaner fuels. Power plants also use varied energy sources, such as nuclear power and renewable energy, to lower overall emissions and make the power supply more reliable and affordable.
