U.S. Border Patrolman Named NRA Law EnforcementOfficer Of The Year (NAPSA)—The National Rifle Association (NRA) has named U.S. Border Patrol Agent Clay B. Tippit, of Marfa, Texas, as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Wy Year for 2001. Tippit, a 16-year veteran of the Border Patrol, was selected based on his actions taken to aid people in need, for his contributions to his community and for his influ- ence on training and individual proficiency with firearms among his fellow Border Patrol members. In particular, the recommendation to honor Tippit cites his actions on January 22, 2001, when he directed operations to rescue an 85-year-old rancher who had been seriously injured in a fall from his horse. Tippit, who flies patrols over the Rio Grande River, flew to the area—at personal risk due to the terrain— landed and provided first aid. Lacking suitable meansto transport the victim, Tippit directed a second aircraft to the site and toa safe landing. His prompt response helped the victim recover after only a few days’ hospitalization. In the field of firearms exper- tise, Tippit is a standout in a law enforcement agency with a long history of excellence. He is a twotime NRA National Police Shooting Champion, the current championship record holder, and he has won numerousindividual matches held as part of the NRA National Police Shooting Championships. In his off-duty hours, Tippit works closely with the youth in Fort Davis, Texas, teaching respect for firearms, firearm safety, and marksmanship. He serves, U.S. Border Patrol Agent Clay B. Tippit, winner of the NRA Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. too, as the area leader for the shooting sports for the Fort Davis 4-H. He is currently a certified Texas Concealed Handgun Instructor and a Texas Hunter Education Instructor. “Agent Tippit is an asset to his country and exemplifies all of the finest qualities of professional law enforcement,” said Ron Kirkland, Director of Law Enforcement Activities Division.
